The Adentan Circuit Court has dismissed Awal Mohammed, the independent candidate for the Madina constituency’s parliamentary seat, after the police withdrew their complaint. Mohammed was purportedly shown with John Mahama on campaign posters.
Following a complaint from Abdul Razak Hussein, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Madina constituency secretary, Awal Mohammed was taken into custody and produced before the court. He was charged with offensive conduct related to disturbances, but he entered a not guilty plea in front of Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam, the presiding judge.
The complainant, Hussein, is the NDC Secretary for the Madina Constituency, and both he and Mohammed are locals, the prosecution, Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, told the court.
When the Electoral Commission began accepting applications for parliamentary candidates, Mohammed—a former member of the NDC—opted to file a nomination form as an independent.
The prosecution claims that Hussein was the recipient of numerous complaints about Mohammed’s actions from party members.
They claimed Mohammed had displayed posters of himself and NDC presidential candidate John Mahama in conspicuous places across the area.
According to the prosecution, party members—especially the younger ones—expressed worry about the posters, worried that they might upset the tranquility in the neighborhood.
Mohammed was asked to make a cautionary statement by the police in response to the complaint. Although he denied placing the posters up, he acknowledged using the NDC flag bearer’s name in his public campaigns.
